Thy Art Is Murder are one of the most technically ferocious and internationally respected heavy bands Australia has ever produced. Formed in the western suburbs of Sydney in 2006, the quintet have built a global career on a foundation of relentless brutality, genuine technical excellence and a stage presence that leaves audiences bloodied and breathless. This is their story.
The Sydney Underground
Thy Art Is Murder emerged from the vibrant deathcore scene developing in Sydney's western suburbs in the mid-2000s. The original lineup of vocalist Brendan van Ryn, guitarists Sean Delander and Andy Marsh, bassist Kevin Butler and drummer Lee Stanton formed the band with an uncompromising commitment to extreme heaviness that would define them throughout their career.
Their 2008 debut album Infinite Death established the core elements of the Thy Art Is Murder sound — brutal breakdowns, technically impressive guitar work, genuinely crushing heaviness and a production aesthetic that emphasised weight and power above all else. The band built their reputation through relentless local touring and a DIY approach to building their audience that was genuinely admirable.
The CJ McMahon Era Begins
The arrival of vocalist CJ McMahon for the 2012 album Hate marked the moment Thy Art Is Murder transformed from promising local band into genuinely world class death metal act. McMahon's vocal intensity combined with the band's technical precision created a sound that simply could not be ignored by the international metal community. Hate debuted at number 35 on the Australian ARIA charts — an extraordinary achievement for a deathcore album.
Thy Art Is Murder's Dear Desolation showed the world that Australian death metal could be world class in every sense. This was not a scene trying to compete with America and Europe. This was a scene leading the conversation.
Global Recognition
The 2015 album Holy War took the band's ambition and technical precision to new levels. Featuring some of the most sophisticated deathcore songwriting of the era and a lyrical focus on religion and organised violence that was both uncomfortable and genuinely thought-provoking, Holy War cemented the band's international reputation and opened doors to touring at a scale previously unavailable to Australian extreme metal acts.
The 2017 album Dear Desolation is widely considered the band's masterpiece. Produced by Will Putney — one of the most respected producers in extreme metal — Dear Desolation combined technical death metal precision with deathcore brutality and genuinely impressive songwriting sophistication. The album placed Thy Art Is Murder firmly among the elite of global death metal.
Surviving the Industry
Thy Art Is Murder's story has not been without struggle. CJ McMahon's departure from the band in 2015 and subsequent return in 2016 was widely documented and saw the vocalist discuss openly the financial and personal difficulties of being in a working metal band at the international level. His candour about the realities of metal musicianship was genuinely valuable to the broader community and helped demystify the economics of extreme music for fans.
The 2019 album Human Target and 2023's Godlike continued the band's evolution as songwriters and performers. Human Target in particular marked a significant artistic step forward, combining the band's signature heaviness with more ambitious compositional structures and genuinely emotional moments. The record demonstrated that Thy Art Is Murder were not simply interested in being heavier than everyone else — they were interested in being better songwriters.
Why Thy Art Is Murder Matter
Thy Art Is Murder's contribution to Australian heavy music is enormous. They are the band that proved Australian extreme metal could be world class in the most technically demanding and most internationally competitive corner of heavy music.
